Introduction
She says was created to encourage friendly communication and discussion among members of the lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and questioning women's community at the University of Texas at Austin. Weekly meetings are held every Tuesday in the Texas Union Eastwoods Room (UNB 2.102) (click here for a map) from 7-8 p.m. If you have a specific question about the meetings, group, socials, or events, you can e-mail us at UTshesays@gmail.com.

Goals

She Says hopes to foster community support for queer women at UT while increasing visibility within the university. We hope to provide forums in which we can educate ourselves as well as others about queer issues, women's issues and queer women's issues. This is accomplished through a variety of educational, social and political events.

What we do

Weekly meetings are facilitated as either group discussions, group discussions involving outside speakers or educators, or social events. In the past we have discussed a wide range of issues such as religion, long-term relationships and marriage, transgender issues (with a trans panel), lesbian/bisexual mothers (with a panel of lesbian/bisexual mothers) and domestic violence.

Social meetings have ranged from bowling or roller-skating to movie nights and pot lucks. We usually host two to three social events a month on the weekends, which range from parties to picnics. We also try to host special events like camping, road trips, open mic nights and laser tag.

The best way to find out about events is to join the She Says listserv.

Listserv

The listserv is a comprehensive e-mail system in which every member receives messages about events, news and concerns of other members. It is an open listserv, which means that members don't only receive e-mails, but can also send them to the entire list. Members usually receive between two and ten e-mails a week, but it is possible to get many more depending on how many people post to the listserv. Some of our members that have trouble get ting this many e-mails have set up a new account with a free service such as Hotmail or Yahoo. Click on the following link to join the listserv.

Herstory

How did She Says get started? Well, here's its "herstory" as told by TREE MARSOOBIAN, the founder, who organized the club some years ago...

"Wanna know a little bit about me? I am originally from Boston, Massachusetts. I came to UT in the fall of '96 and graduated four, amazingly years later with a BS in speech-language pathology (in May 2000). Since then I have worked at a local bicycle shop -- cycling rocks! I have recently gone back to school and am pursuing another degree at ACC to be a paramedic.

In Boston, I was a part of the Lesbian Avengers, which is a grassroots political action group focused on issues vital to lesbian visibility and survival. I was also the co-president of the Boston Alliance of Gay and Lesbian Youth (BAGLY) and once had the great honor of speaking at the Boston Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender Pride March in June 1995. Since I have been very active in the community for a long time, when I first moved to Austin it was hard to adjust to not having a place. But, I soon got involved with the Lesbian Avengers and went to other GLBT organizations on campus. I then started She Says in the fall of 1997. I saw a great need for it on this campus since the only lesbian/bisexual women's organization was no longer around. I am quite confident to say that She Says has been a powerful voice in the GLBT community of UT and has worked hard to bring the queer women of the UT community together.

As of the fall of 2002, She Says is now in its fifth year of membership and now on its third director. I'm excited to see that She Says has become quite active again. It's spectacular to see the new officers breathing a new and different life into the organization and I wish them the best of luck." --Tree Marsoobian
