What is the Queer Leadership Institute (QLI)?
QLI is an opportunity for members of the LGBTQ community to come together to meet each other, learn, teach, dialogue, improve the community and have fun. The QLI focuses on how our community functions at UT, in Austin, and globally, as well as how we can make the world more socially just for all people.
What are the goals of the QLI?
The institute will encourage lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning and ally students at the University to:
- Become acclimated to the campus and local LGBTQ communities
- Learn the skills necessary to become effective activists and leaders in LGBTQ communities
- Envision and work toward a socially just campus, local and global community
What does QLI include?
Guest speakers, dialogues, social justice training, team-building and leadership activities, activism workshops and more. Institute participants will learn about the history of queer organizing on the UT-Austin campus and how they can play a role in continuing and strengthening the tradition. Students will be given the tools to frame their experiences in terms of their multiple social identities and the ways in which they experience privilege and oppression in their own lives. Participants will have a chance to meet their peers in LGBTQ communities, as well as student leaders, faculty/staff allies and local community activists. Food and drink will be provided at each event.
Who can attend?
The Institute is open to any interested UT-Austin student and is entirely free of charge. First- and second-year students are particularly encouraged to attend, though students at all levels of study (including graduate level) are welcome to attend. Students are asked to register by Sept. 5.
